I read somewhere that the point of stainless steel was to make mercenaries a bigger part of an army instead of relying on recruiting so much. WebWell, I downloaded my Stainless steel on a mac onto a non-Steam version (using Wine to make it all work). So this might not be applicable. But when you start the game regularly, and it brings up the launcher, go to Advanced, check Advanced Options, and in the text box copy:
